James Francis Gill is one of the last living early Pop Art artists.
Hollywood stars from film and music, art collectors, business people and museums - they all collected the works of art by James Francis Gill in the 1960s. Alongside Pop Art greats such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, James Gill is one of the founders of Pop Art. Gill designed the poster for Charlie Chaplin's last film with Sophia Loren and Marlon Brando. TIME magazine and LIFE magazine used Gill to design the cover. Celebrities such as Tony Curtis and John Wayne asked him to make portraits of them.
The Museum of Modern Art in New York has had works of art by James Gill in its permanent collection since 1962. Gill retired in 1972, during the peak of his artistic career. It was not until around 30 years later that he returned to the art scene.
